Effective ways to prepare for exams

For each and every student, it can be time consuming and stressful to prepare for exams. The students should not take any stress, instead they follow some simple steps to ensure their confidence to attend for the exams. Following are some ways that can help the students to effectively prepare for exams:

Part 1- Prepare to study

  • Start studying early: Spend time to revise all the topics that was covered in class. Further, student must analyze how soon to start studying and how much material he will need to review. If a student has to review material for a complete semester, then he might need to start studying a few weeks prior to the exam.
  • Review the notebooks thoroughly to cover all the important topics: It will refresh your memory of the material you have and help you remember what you have learnt till date. Further, it can help to make a student aware of all the single information present in the notebooks.
  • Get some proper notes: If you are not a good note taker, or if you have incomplete notes then, ask your friends to make copies of their notes. As good notes can explain the content effectively that the book even does not explain well. Besides, it can make a big difference when you are studying.
  • Ask the teacher for the test material:The simple way to effectively start the studying process is to find out what is on the test directly from the teacher. Sometimes, important topics will be provided by the teachers.

  • Read your notes: Now, start reading your gathered notes and material for understanding. At the beginning, read the most basic and general information written on the notes. For example, if you are studying about packages of Java, make sure you know what Java means.
  • Make rough notes while studying: While studying, make rough notes along with highlighting and underlining the information, where writing the information really helps the student to retain it in a better way.
  • Review the syllabus: The syllabus is an outline of everything that a student has learned in the class. Reviewing the syllabus and highlighting the subtitles and heading will be beneficial, as it will help a student to understand major topics and ideas that you should be learning from the class.
  • Write down the major themes and topics that you pulled out of the syllabus: Thoroughly over look all the important topics to ensure that you have all the related notes. Further, anything highlighted or outlined in the syllabus is basically a fair game for test material.
  • Review study sections and guides: A student must use reference or guide book as it provides short summary or review of each chapter. The guides aregreat thing to quickly review and get a clear gist of concept.
  • Revise important highlights of the text: You should revise all of the titled sections of the book from the syllabus so that you can effectively gather the information.

Part 3-Preparing for the Exam

  • Make flash cards: Use the gathered notes taken by all the materials such as books and notes in order to make flash cards. Cut the papers in square shapes to use as flash cards.
  • Quiz yourself: Quiz yourself with the cards, once every questions related to the syllabus are written down on the flash cards. Continuously keep reviewing the questions, which you get wrong until you get them right.
  • Do practice questions: This is especially helpful for the subjects like Math. Practice the numerical questions that are previously assigned as homework by the teacher. Re-do questions which you got wrong.

Part 4-Determining Exam Questions

  • Review past tests: Collet previous test question papers from seniors or friends. Take note of the questions, which were answered and the answered that were marked incorrect and correct.
  • Determine the format:In order to understand the format of the test whether it will be short answer, multiple choice or essay, review the past tests. It also gives a student a clear idea about how to study.
  • Go to class the day before the exam: Some teachers provide more accurate information about the test a day or two days before exam. Sometimes, they might even tell you about exactly what will be on the test and what will not be.

Do group studies:

  • Study with a friend: Sit together with a group of friends from you class and study together. It is not necessary to be a formal study group. In the group study, you can simply review each other’s notes to see what you have nissed.
  • Quiz each other: While studying in a group, ask each other potential questions. Quiz each other by using flashcards or ask your friends to formulate new questions.
  • Chat about the concepts: Sometimes, discussing with class mates or friends about the topics can be beneficial, as it helps to learn more about the information related to syllabus.
